Success as a Peer Helper in the SEO

Last April (2012) when I interviewed for the Student Success Peer Helper Position, I had no idea what was in store for me. I had always been involved in high school and was hoping to get involved in university as I entered my second year at Carleton. I expected a general office position that would provide me with new skills to put on my resume. Instead, I got so much more. Being a Peer Helper has been an awesome experience, and I am so glad I chose to become a part of the program.

This term (Fall 2012), I organized the CU Amazing Race with my office partner and the help of my supervisor at the Student Experience Office. What a ride! It was so rewarding to see our ideas come to life. The concept of the race was simple: 25 teams raced around campus figuring out clues and competing in challenges in the attempt to win a grand prize of a trip to Florida. It would have definitely been nice to be able to compete and possibly go to Florida, but I wouldn’t have traded organizing the race for anything. The teams that competed were so friendly and enthusiastic, and I had a blast getting to know them as they ran around campus. Two months of planning all came down to the grand finale and the race went off without a hitch.

The Peer Helper Program has allowed me to get involved on campus in ways I wouldn’t have usually thought of. Rather than just attending events, I’m able to be a part of them and contribute my ideas. The staff at the Student Experience Office have been more than welcoming and have helped me build my leadership skills and grow as a person. From double sided photocopying, to conducting interviews and organizing a school-wide event, I have learned so much at the SEO and it’s only halfway through the year. I have met so many new friends and gained so many new experiences that I’m confident that when I leave Carleton I’ll have the knowledge and skills necessary to build a career.

The position has opened up so many doors and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me next term.
