Five Best Experiences
Breanna Lester, is a fourth-year history student.
1. Being part of the impact:
Carleton Serves was the first ever event I participated in at Carleton. In first year, I went to Ottawa Neighbourhood Services and in second year I went to Carlingview Manor. In third year I decided to step it up a notch and volunteered as a Team Leader for both Carleton Serves and a Day of Service. In third year I went to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and L’Arche Ottawa and this year I went to Ecology Ottawa. Not only does Carleton Serves allow you to experience Ottawa in a new way, but you also learn so much about yourself and the community you contribute to. I have made many friends through this experience that I will never forget.
2. Peer Helping:
In second year, I started working as a Peer Helper in Learning Support Services. In my opinion, peer helping is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have at Carleton. Giving back to the student body, helping fellow students succeed and survive life as a Carleton undergraduate while inadvertently helping myself succeed was a game-changer for me. I will take those experiences and the skills I learned there with me wherever I go.
3. Student societies:
In third year, I decided to be a bigger part of my department’s student society, the History Undergraduate Society (HUgS). It is here that I solidified relationships with people I will never forget. It really brought me closer to my degree.
4. Student Registration Assistance:
I spent this past summer with 17 other students on campus helping students register for their classes and navigate Carleton Central. I really enjoyed being able to help other students out while building relationships with some of Carleton’s strongest ambassadors. Summer 2013 was the best summer yet and I can’t speak highly enough about my experience with SRA.
5. Being home away from home:
In campus tours and summer orientation, they told us that going to Carleton is like moving into a new community. They weren’t lying! Carleton became my home away from home even after I moved out of residence. The connections I made with faculty, staff and students during my four years here I will miss. So, make these three or four years the best they can be by diving into this community and putting your heart into everything you do. I promise, you won’t regret it and will probably never want to leave.
