I am going to tell you something I wish was more emphasized my first year: get involved!
Zachary Bradley is a third year journalism student.
You have officially made it to your first year of university, congratulations.
I am going to tell you something I wish was more emphasized when I entered my first year: get involved!
You may think you are unique or special by making it to university, but sadly, you’re not. You need to make yourself unique; make yourself different from every other student at Carleton. I stress this because in four years when you graduate with all these other students starting this year, you want to stand out. A degree is good, but it is no longerenough. You need experience. You need to be noteworthy. Remarkable. Unique. If you just do the minimum, you will not end up the graduate you could have been. Carleton is full of opportunities: do not waste them. You only have four short years to create yourself, so get started. Make connections. Learn new skills. Make new friends. Get your foot into the door that will be your profession.
Thus, get involved on campus. Carleton is full of societies, groups, sports, special events, and volunteering opportunities. And this is just a starting point. Ottawa is a city full of opportunities. Getting started at Carleton will help find these opportunities across the city, and even the country. All you have to do is just start.
This is an amazing school in an even better city. Are you ready?
Enjoy your years here. Please don’t waste them.
