Part-Time Job Fair
Brandon Hoto is a fourth-year English student.
On Wednesday, September 21, 2016, Career Services held a Part-Time Job Fair featuring employers from all over Ottawa. I visited each of them and asked for the inside scoop on what they are looking for in potential employees and what they like to see on a resume.
Here are some of the companies that showed up. Go and check out any of their websites for relevant job postings.
A COMMON THEME: CUSTOMER SERVICE
Almost all of the employers were looking for students who had customer service experience. Customer service is a crucial aspect of any business or company. The customer service department and its employees represent the company and help to develop the public’s perception of the company. Excellent customer service means meeting the needs and wishes of every customer in a timely manner. Customer service is the act of taking care of the customer’s needs by providing and delivering professional, helpful, high-quality service and assistance before, during and after the customer’s requirements are met. If you have ever worked or volunteered, you most likely have experience in customer service.
TAILORING YOUR RESUME: SHOWING THAT YOU CARE
Many of the employers were aware of the fact that many students simply hand in the exact same resume at each booth in the hopes of securing employment. What students should be doing, however, is tailoring their resume to the requirements of each position. Tailoring your resume shows that you have the specific skillset that the employer is looking for, and that you cared enough about the position to research their needs and match them with your resume. Employers do look for this.
Not sure how to tailor your resume? Career Services can help!
Available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30 pm. No appointment necessary.
Also, download our Career Fair+ app on your iPhone or Android today (http://carleton.ca/career/cf-app) and take a look at the upcoming Career Fairs. You will have access to which employers are coming as well as a map of the booths ahead of time so you can pre plan your route!
